Asian stock markets sink over US debt fears
Oil fell below $97 a barrel. The dollar weakened against the yen and strengthened against the euro.
Investors were growing increasingly anxious as the U.S. government came another day closer to an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the country's $14.3 trillion borrowing limit.
If there is no legislation in place by then, officials say the Treasury will not be able to pay all the nation's bills and possible trigger a catastrophic default on its debts. Investors are worried such a default would send shockwaves through the global financial markets as the U.S. economy is still struggling to recover from the worst recession in decades.
Stock markets will likely grow more volatile as any possible solution comes down to the wire
The House of Representatives plans a vote Thursday on a Republican plan to cut spending and raise the borrowing limit. Senate leaders are watching what happens to that plan before moving ahead with their own.
"As the 2nd August deadline is looming and no progress has been made so far, the worries over the US credit rating downgrade and debt default has spread to the equity market as well," strategists at Credit Agricole CIB wrote in a research note. "For the day ahead, market mood will likely remain downbeat."
Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average sank 1.1 percent to 9,935.07 and South Korea's Kospi fell 0.9 percent to 2,154.85. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.1 percent to 4,487.10.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slid 1.2 percent to 22,258.34 and mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.3 percent to 2,687.92.
Benchmarks in New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan also fell.
Asian stocks took their lead from declines on Wednesday in U.S. markets, indicating growing anxiety among investors over the debt impasse.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1.6 percent to 12,302.55, its biggest one-day drop since early June. It has fallen for four days straight. The S&P 500 fell or 2 percent to 1,304.89. The technology-focused Nasdaq composite index fell or 2.6 percent, to 2,764.79, its worst day in five months.
In currencies, the dollar weakened to 77.77 yen from 78.06 late Wednesday in New York. The euro fell to $1.4344 from $1.4372.
Benchmark oil for September delivery was down 60 cents to $96.80 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude lost $2.19 to settle at $97.40 on Wednesday.

400 super rich Americans control more wealth in the country than 150 million other Americans
400 super rich Americans control more wealth in the country than 150 million other Americans
Even though a government shutdown was averted – working class people will still be screwed over in America. A new report by Wealth for the Common Good shows that the 400 richest people in America – our nation’s oligarchs – have never had it so good and are paying the lowest taxes ever in their lifetimes.
Those 400 super rich Americans control more wealth in the country than 150 million other Americans, and yet are effectively taxed at a rate of just over 16% while the rest of spay up to 35% plus higher levels of sales, property, and other taxes. To put that in perspective These 400 rich oligarchs effective tax rate has dropped by more than 2/3 since Dwight Eisenhower's administration – while the rate for working people has nearly doubled. Rich people get a 2/3 tax cut over the last 50 years – working people get screwed with a 100% tax hike.
To make matters worse – average CEO pay increased dramatically last year – despite an 20% real under- and un-employment rate plaguing the rest of us. And yet – now Congress says they're gonna pass a budget that cuts federal education, health care, and energy assistance programs for working class Americans while doing nothing to make America’s oligarchs pay their fair share or sacrifice even one damn thing.

Mass Layoffs Grim Sign for U.S. Workers
Putting pressure on an already lousy job market, the mass layoff is making a comeback. In the past week, Cisco, Lockheed Martin and Borders announced a combined 23,000 in job cuts. (See: Another Retailer Bites the Dust: Borders Doomed by Amazon Deal, Davidowitz Says)
Those announcements follow 41,432 in planned cuts in June, up 11.6% from May and 5.3% vs. a year earlier, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
Meanwhile, state and local governments have cut 142,000 jobs this year, The WSJ reports, and Wall Street is braced for another round of cutbacks. This week, Goldman Sachs announced plans to let go 1000 fixed-income traders.
If these trends continue, we may soon be talking about losses in the monthly employment data -- not just disappointing growth, says Howard Davidowitz, CEO of Davidowitz & Associates
"Everything in business is confidence," Davidowitz says. "You lose confidence and businesses can't deal with that [and] who could have confidence with what's going on in Washington?"
Davidowitz is bipartisan in his criticism, calling the U.S. political system "dysfunctional and deranged." (See: "A Bunch of Morons in Washington": Howard Davidowitz Handicaps the Debt Ceiling Debate)
Still, the restructuring expert is a longtime and vocal critic of President Obama: "There has never been in a situation in my lifetime where a guy increases the debt by 40%, GDP growth is on the way down, Food Stamps are up, millions more are unemployed -- and to accomplish this we spent $4 trillion."
But it's an open question whether any president or policy mix could do much to revive the economy after the bursting of the credit bubble.
In This Time is Different, co-authors Ken Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart demonstrate that financial crises are typically followed by severe recessions, slow recoveries, subpar growth and greater frequency of recessions in the decade following the crisis. (See: Bernanke In Denial About Economy's Fate, Vincent Reinhart Says)
"No one believes the economy, Obama or not, is going to improve," my Breakout colleague Jeff Macke says in the accompanying clip. "Time [is] the only thing that heals."

Fears Send Gold Price To Record
Investors are worried about debt problems on both sides of the Atlantic. So they bid gold up $12.30 an ounce Monday to settle at $1,602.40. That's a record for the market price for gold, but below its 1980 peak after adjusting for inflation. An ounce of gold at that time cost $850, or about $2,400 in today's dollars.
Gold is looking better by the day because debt problems in the U.S. and Europe are making two other so-called safe havens, the dollar and the euro, seem shaky. The U.S. could default on its debt on Aug. 2 if Congress and the White House don't agree to raise the country's borrowing limit. In Europe, investors worry that Greece may default. Countries including Italy, Spain and Ireland are also struggling to pay their bills. Defaults could mean losses for the banks that own bonds issued by those countries, and that could trigger widespread disruption in financial markets.
Why own gold? It's because gold has a long history as a way of preserving wealth, said Tom Winmill, portfolio manager of the $96 million Midas Fund. The fund owns gold and stocks in gold mines. "In 6,000 years, gold is one of the very few assets that have never gone to zero." Winmill expects gold to rise to $1,800 by the end of 2012.
Investors believe gold is safe because it doesn't depend on a government's ability to repay a bond, like a Treasury or a Greek note. Neither do other commodities like crude oil, which has the added use of powering automobiles. "But it's much easier to pick up a bar of gold than a swimming pool of oil," said James Steel, an analyst with HSBC.
Gold rose 21 percent in dollar terms in the 12 months through June 30, according to the World Gold Council, an industry group. It rose against other currencies, too: up 2.2 percent in euros, 10.4 percent in Japanese yen and 16.5 percent in Indian rupees. But gold fell 5.5 percent against the Swiss franc, which is seen as one of the world's safest currencies.
Gold's rise has accelerated in the last two weeks: Monday was its 10th straight day of gains after it closed at $1,482.60 July 1. Gold has also steadily risen since the start of 2009, when it cost $880. The Federal Reserve has kept short-term interest rates at a record low of nearly zero since December 2008. Low interest rates weaken the appeal of the dollar, and that in turn sends gold higher.
Investors are behind much of the increase in the price of gold. Demand from investors rose 26 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, according to industry data. Demand for gold from dentists for crowns and from companies for use in electronics was flat. Demand for gold in jewelry rose 7 percent.
The amount of gold held by exchange-traded funds and similar investments is at a record, according to Barclays Capital. Exchange-traded funds, also known as ETFs, trade like stocks and are a way for investors to own gold without having to store and insure actual gold bars or coins.
But much of that demand has been from speculative investors, such as hedge funds, said Jon Nadler, senior metals analyst with Kitco Metals. Gold could plunge — if investors regain their confidence that the U.S. won't default and that the 27-nation European Union won't be threatened by the region's debt problems.
"I wish this was all about the man on the street, pension funds, but it's not," Nadler said. "It's the type of player that tends to get up at the very next opportunity to find something hot elsewhere. Will all this end in tears?" Quite likely yes, because I see that the demise of the European Union and the United States as a debt entity is really not in the cards."

Share of children in US hits record low
WASHINGTON (AP) — Children now make up less of America's population than ever before, even with a boost from immigrant families.
And when this generation grows up, it will become a shrinking work force that will have to support the nation's expanding elderly population — even as the government strains to cut spending for health care, pensions and much else.
The latest 2010 census data show that children of immigrants make up one in four people under 18, and are now the fastest-growing segment of the nation's youth, an indication that both legal and illegal immigrants as well as minority births are lifting the nation's population.
Currently, the share of children in the U.S. is 24 percent, falling below the previous low of 26 percent of 1990. The share is projected to slip further, to 23 percent by 2050, even as the percentage of people 65 and older is expected to jump from 13 percent today to roughly 20 percent by 2050 due to the aging of baby boomers and beyond.
In 1900, the share of children reached as high as 40 percent, compared to a much smaller 4 percent share for seniors 65 and older. The percentage of children in subsequent decades held above 30 percent until 1980, when it fell to 28 percent amid declining birth rates, mostly among whites.
"There are important implications for the future of the U.S. because the increasing costs of providing for an older population may reduce the public resources that go to children," said William P. O'Hare, a senior consultant with the Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation, a children's advocacy group.
Pointing to signs that many children are already struggling, O'Hare added: "These raise urgent questions about whether today's children will have the resources they need to help care for America's growing elderly population."
The numbers are largely based on an analysis by the Population Reference Bureau, a nonprofit research group in Washington that studies global and U.S. trends. In some cases, the data were supplemented with additional census projections on U.S. growth from 2010-2050 as well as figures compiled by the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Kids Count project.
Nationwide, the number of children has grown by 1.9 million, or 2.6 percent, since 2000. That represents a drop-off from the previous decade, when even higher rates of immigration by Latinos — who are more likely than some other ethnic groups to have large families — helped increase the number of children by 8.7 million, or 13.7 percent.
Percentages aside, 23 states and the District of Columbia had declines in their numbers of children in the century's first decade, with Michigan, Rhode Island, Vermont and D.C. seeing some of the biggest drops.
On the other hand, states with some of the biggest increases — Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Texas — also ranked in the bottom one-third of states in terms of child well-being as measured by the Kids Count project. The project calculated child well-being based on levels of poverty, single-parent families, unemployment, high-school dropouts and other factors.
The slowing population growth in the U.S. mirrors to a lesser extent the situation in other developed nations, including Russia, Japan and France which are seeing reduced growth or population losses due to declining birth rates and limited immigration. The combined population of more-developed countries other than the U.S. is projected to decline beginning in 2016, raising the prospect of prolonged budget crises as the number of working-age citizens diminish, pension costs rise and tax revenues fall.
Japan, France, Germany and Canada each have lower shares of children under age 15, ranging between 13 percent in Japan and 17 percent in Canada, while nations in Africa and the Middle East have some of the largest shares, including 50 percent in Niger and 46 percent in Afghanistan, according to figures from the United Nations Population Division.
In the U.S., the share of children under 15 is 20 percent.
Depending on future rates of immigration, the U.S. population is estimated to continue growing through at least 2050. In a hypothetical situation in which all immigration — both legal and illegal — immediately stopped, the U.S. could lose population beginning in 2048, according to the latest census projections.
Since 2000, the increase for children in the U.S. — 1.9 million — has been due to racial and ethnic minorities.
Currently, 54 percent of the nation's children are non-Hispanic white, compared to 23 percent Hispanic, 14 percent black, and 4 percent Asian.
Over the past decade, the number of non-Hispanic white children declined 10 percent to 39.7 million, while the number of minority children rose 22 percent to 34.5 million. Hispanics, as well as Asians, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and multiracial children represented all of the growth. The number of black and American Indian children declined.
In nearly one of five U.S. counties, minority children already outnumber white children.
"The 'minority youth bulge' is being driven primarily by children in immigrant families," said Mark Mather, associate vice president of the Population Reference Bureau who co-wrote a report released Tuesday on the subject. "They are transforming America's schools, and in a generation they will transform the racial-ethnic composition of the U.S. work force."
"Policymakers are paying a lot of attention to the elderly, but we have a large population of children who have their own needs," he said.
The numbers come as states around the nation are seeking to cut education spending and other programs — rather than raise taxes — to close gaping budget holes as schools districts run out of $100 billion in federal stimulus money that helped stave off job losses over the past two years.
In Texas, for instance, the Legislature changed state law so it could slash education spending by $4 billion over the next two years to help make up for a $27 billion budget shortfall. The move is the first cut in per-student spending in Texas since World War II, even as the state has gained nearly 1 million children over the past decade, many of them Hispanic.
The school cutbacks are expected to have a disproportionate effect on low-income communities which are less able to raise local school taxes. Advocates believe that could further widen the achievement gap between students of different races in states like Texas, where some of the fastest student growth is among those who are poor and whose primary language is not English.
The resulting cuts will be far-reaching and surprising to many parents and communities, from teacher layoffs to reductions in extracurricular programs and ballooning class sizes, said Jenny LaCoste-Caputo, a spokeswoman for the Texas Association of School Administrators.
"When people say, 'Cut government spending,' they don't think about the impact on the school down the street, until local voters begin to see the harm later," she said. "That's when we will really see the backlash. The sad thing is we'll have many kids suffer in the process."
Similar battles over education funding have played out in California, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin.
Other census findings:
—Based on current trends, Florida could surpass New York as the third-largest state in overall population before the next census in 2020, part of a long-term migration of U.S. residents to the South and West. The most populous states are California and Texas.
—While more than half of U.S. residents now live in suburbs, the number of people living in cities also has rebounded somewhat in the past decade, increasing by 3 percentage points. Roughly one-third of the U.S. population lives in cities, the highest share since 1950.

Riots erupt in Northern Ireland
Economy Faces Jolt as Benefit Checks Run Out
Close to $2 of every $10 that went into Americans’ wallets last year were payments like jobless benefits, food stamps, Social Security and disability, according to an analysis by Moody’s Analytics. In states hit hard by the downturn, like Arizona, Florida, Michigan and Ohio, residents derived even more of their income from the government.
By the end of this year, however, many of those dollars are going to disappear, with the expiration of extended benefits intended to help people cope with the lingering effects of the recession. Moody’s Analytics estimates $37 billion will be drained from the nation’s pocketbooks this year.
In terms of economic impact, that is slightly less than the spending cuts Congress enacted to keep the government financed through September, averting a shutdown.
Unless hiring picks up sharply to compensate, economists fear that the lost income will further crimp consumer spending and act as a drag on a recovery that is still quite fragile. Among the other supports that are slipping away are federal aid to the states, the Federal Reserve’s program to pump money into the economy and the payroll tax cut, scheduled to expire at the end of the year.
“If we don’t get more job growth and gains in wages and salaries, then consumers just aren’t going to have the firepower to spend, and the economy is going to weaken,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, a macroeconomic consulting firm.
Job growth has remained elusive. There are 4.6 unemployed workers for every opening, according to the Labor Department, and Friday’s unemployment report showed that employers added an anemic 18,000 jobs in June.
In Arizona, where there are 10 job seekers for every opening, 45,000 people could lose benefits by the end of the year, according to estimates from the state Department of Economic Security. Yet employers in the state have added just 4,000 jobs over the last 12 months.
Some other states will also feel a disproportionate loss of income unless hiring revives. In Florida, where nearly 476,000 people are collecting unemployment benefits, employers have added only 11,200 jobs in the last year. In Michigan, employers have added about 40,000 jobs since May 2010, but about 267,000 people are claiming jobless benefits.
Throughout the recession and its aftermath, government benefits have helped keep money in people’s wallets and, in turn, circulating among businesses. Total government payments rose to $2.3 trillion in 2010, from $1.7 trillion in 2007, an increase of about 35 percent.
While some of that growth was in Social Security and disability benefits as the population aged, the majority resulted from payments to people continuing to suffer from the recession, said Mr. Zandi. Unemployment benefits, including emergency and extended benefits, are more than three times their prerecession level, he said. The nearly 20 percent of personal income now provided by the government is close to a record high.
Approved by Congress last December, the final extension of jobless benefits — for a maximum of 99 weeks for each unemployed person — is scheduled to conclude at the end of this year. A handful of states, like Wisconsin and Arizona, have already cut off weeks 80 through 99 for their residents. Meanwhile, more of the long-term unemployed are bumping up against the 99-week limit.
Consumers account for an estimated 60 to 70 percent of the country’s economic activity, but two years into the official recovery, businesses are still complaining that people simply are not spending enough.
“Regardless of why people have less money to spend, it affects all retailers in all industries,” said Michael Siemienas, spokesman for SuperValu, which operates grocery chains including Cub Foods, Shop ’n Save and Save-A-Lot. Mr. Siemienas said that the number of SuperValu’s customers using electronic benefit transfers to pay bills had grown over the last year.
Because benefit payments tend to be spent right away to cover basic needs like food and rent, they provide a direct boost to consumer spending. In a study for the Labor Department, Wayne Vroman, an economist at the Urban Institute, estimated that every $1 paid in jobless benefits generated as much as $2 in the economy.
For many of the nearly 7.5 million people collecting unemployment benefits, those payments are keeping them afloat. Laura Metz, 42, was laid off from a clerical job paying $15.30 an hour at a home health care provider near her home in Commerce, Mich., nearly 15 months ago. She has been collecting $362 a week in unemployment insurance and about $50 a month in food stamps.
That covers the basics. But Ms. Metz stopped making her mortgage payments last year on the modest home she shares with her 19-year-old son. A program that allowed her to make a lower monthly payment has expired, and she is waiting to see if the lender will modify her loan. She can no longer make her student loan payments for her bachelor’s degree or master’s in business administration, and she has downgraded her Internet and cable service and cut back on car trips and snacks.
Ms. Metz, who has been applying for administrative jobs, has been shocked at the dearth of opportunities. A decade ago, when she applied for clerical jobs, “as soon as I walked up, there was a sign saying ‘We’re hiring,’ but it’s not like that now,” she said. “It’s really, really difficult.”
Businesses that rely heavily on low-income shoppers worry that their customers will have little to spend. Najib Atisha, who co-owns two small grocery stores in Detroit, said people receiving government assistance made up about a third of his customers downtown and as much as 60 percent at his store on the west side of the city.
“Of course, we’re hoping that things will turn around, but it’s always easier to lose jobs than it is to gain jobs,” Mr. Atisha said. “I think it’s going to take twice as long to rebound as it took to get where we are now.”
Some business groups argue that extending unemployment benefits has had deleterious effects on employers and potential workers.
“It’s having a chilling effect on hiring,” said Wendy Block, director of health policy and human resources at the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. “At one point, our unemployment taxes were just a blip on the balance sheet, but when you’re talking over $500 a head, this is significant.” Last year, Michigan spent $6.2 billion on jobless benefits, according to the National Employment Law Center.
Some economic studies show that people who collect unemployment benefits are less likely to look for or accept work until their benefits are close to running out.
“Unemployment insurance extends the typical amount of time that people will spend off the job and not looking for work,” said Chris Edwards, an economist at the Cato Institute, a libertarian organization.
In Michigan, Ms. Metz said that if all else failed, she would have to move in with her parents, who live on a fixed income. But she is determined to find work before her benefits run out and plans to expand her search to include light industrial manufacturing. “It’s getting close to the end,” she said. “And I got to do what I got to do.”

Top 10 Scariest Food Additives
The problem with additives runs deep. The FDA currently maintains a list of ingredients called Everything Added to Food in the United States (EAFUS), which features more than 3,000 items and counting. Thankfully, most EAFUS ingredients are benign, but a few of them do have potentially harmful effects. Why they're legal is a mystery to us. Some of them might be backed by powerful lobby groups, while others probably survive simply because some guy at the FDA has too much paperwork on his desk and hasn't made time to adequately review the data.
Below are 10 of the most dubious ingredients hiding in your food, compliments of Eat This, Not That! 2011. Even if you're not convinced of their danger, you have to admit this: The more filler ingredients you cut from your diet, the more space you have for wholesome, nutritious foods.
Scary Ingredient #1: Olestra
A fat substitute synthesized by Procter & Gamble. Because human digestive enzymes can't break down the big molecules, Olestra contributes 0 calories to your diet.
Why it’s scary: In the late ’90s, Frito-Lay released Olestra-enhanced WOW chips and Procter & Gamble introduced Fat Free Pringles. Both products were required to carry warning labels to notify customers about the risk of "loose stools." Within 4 years, some 15,000 people had dialed in to a hotline set up specifically to handle adverse-reaction complaints. Apparently the complaints didn't move the FDA, because in 2003, the administration revoked the warning-label mandate. If you want to take your chances with diarrhea, go ahead, but first consider this: Olestra also appears to interfere with the body's ability to absorb some crucial nutrients like beta-carotene and lycopene. To counteract the effect, processers add some nutrients back, but it's unlikely that all the blocked nutrients are adequetly replaced.
Furthermore, just last week I tweeted that an animal study at Purdue University found that fake fats like Olestra may cause more weight gain than real fat.
Scary Ingredient #2: Caramel Coloring
An artificial pigment created by heating sugars. Frequently, this process includes ammonia.
Why it’s scary: Caramel coloring shows up in everything from soft drinks and sauces to breads and pastries. When made from straight sugar, it's relatively benign. But when produced with ammonia it puts off 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole, chemicals that have been linked to cancer in mice. The risk is strong enough that the California government, a bellwether for better food regulation, categorized 4-methylimidazole as “known to cause cancer” earlier this year. Unfortunately, companies aren't required to disclose whether their coloring is made with ammonia, so you'd be wise to avoid it as much as you can.
Where you'll find it: Colas and other soft drinks, La Choy soy sauce, Stove Top stuffing mix
Scary Ingredient #3: Saccharin
An artificial sweetener discovered by accident in the 1870s.
Why it’s scary: Studies have linked saccharin to bladder tumors in rats, and in 1977, the FDA required warning labels on all saccharin-containing foods. In 2000, the agency changed its stance and allowed saccharin to be sold without warning labels. But that doesn't make it entirely safe. A 2008 Purdue study found that replacing sugar with saccharin in rats’ diets made them gain more weight, proving once again that you should be aware of these faux fat foes.
Where you'll find it: Sweet ‘N Low, TaB cola

Scary Ingredient #4: Potassium Bromate
A compound that conditions flour and helps bread puff up during baking.
Why it’s scary: Potassium bromate causes thyroid and kidney tumors in rats, and it's banned from food use in many countries. In California, products containing potassium bromate are required to carry a cancer warning. Fortunately, negative publicity has made the additive relatively rare, but until the FDA banishes it, you should remain on the lookout.
Where you'll find it: Johnny Rockets Hoagie Roll
TERRIBLE SALADS: Even foods that sound perfectly healthy can be secretly loaded with dangerous amounts of fat and sodium. To prove it, we've collected this absolutely shocking list of 20 Salads Worse Than a Whopper. (Yes, in THESE cases it's better for you to have the burger instead!)
Scary Ingredient #5: Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)
Petroleum-derived antioxidants and preservatives.
Why they're scary: The Department of Health and Human Services says BHA is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen," yet the FDA allows it to be used anyway. BHT is considered less dangerous, but in animal research, it too has resulted in cancer. Oddly, the chemicals aren’t even always necessary; in most cases they can be replaced with vitamin E.
Where you'll find it: Goya lard, Golden Grahams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Orbit gum
Scary Ingredient #6: Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
A semi-solid fat created when food processors force hydrogen into unsaturated fatty acids.
Why it's scary: Partially hydrogenated fats are the principle sources of trans fat in the American diet, and a Harvard study estimated that trans fat causes 70,000 heart attacks every year. The good news: Partially hydrogenated oils are beginning to slowly retreat from our food. Progressive jurisdictions like New York City are starting to restrict the allowable amounts in restaurants, and many chains are switching to healthier frying oil. Still, the battle isn’t over. At Long John Silver’s, for example, there are still 17 menu items with more than 2 grams of the stuff. According to the American Heart Association, that's about the maximum you should consume in a single day.
Where you'll find it: McDonald’s McChicken, Long John Silver’s Broccoli Cheese Soup
Scary Ingredient #7: Sulfites
Preservatives that maintain the color of food, and by releasing sulfur dioxide, prevent bacterial growth.
Why it's scary: Humans have used sulfites to keep food fresh for thousands of years, but some people—especially asthma sufferers—experience breathing difficulties when exposed. In the 1980s, unregulated use resulted in at least a dozen deaths, prompting the FDA to slap warning labels on wine bottles and develop new guidelines for proper use. Now restaurants can no longer soak fresh ingredients in sulfites. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, there have been no known deaths since the new legislation took hold. The bottom line: If you're among the majority of people not sensitive to sulfites, consumption won’t hurt you. If you're not sure, ask your doctor for a test.

Scary Ingredient #8: Azodicarbonamide
A synthetic yellow-orange dough conditioner
Why it's scary: This chemical is used most frequently in the production of industrial foam plastic, and although the FDA has approved its use for food in the States, the United Kingdom has labeled it a potential cause of asthma. In a review of 47 studies on azodicarbonamide, the World Health Organization concluded that it probably does trigger asthmatic symptoms. The WHO concluded, “exposure levels should be reduced as much as possible.” I’ll put it more concisely: Avoid it.
Where you'll find it: Dunkin’ Donuts bagels, McDonald’s burger buns
Scary Ingredient #9: Carrageenan
A thickener and emulsifier extracted from seaweed.
Why it's scary: Seaweed is actually good for you, but carrageenan is a mere seaweed byproduct. Through animal studies, it has been linked to cancer, colon trouble, and ulcers. It isn’t certain that carrageenan harms humans, but avoiding it is clearly the safer option. Most studies examined degraded forms of the additive, and research from the University of Iowa found that carrageenan could be degraded through the normal digestive process.

Scary Ingredient #10: Ammonium Sulfate
An inorganic salt that occurs naturally near active volcanoes and is used commercially to nourish yeast and help bread rise.
Why it's scary: This nitrogen-rich compound is most often used as fertilizer, and also appears commonly in flame retardants. Thankfully, the ingredient only sounds scary—a 2006 Japanese rat study found the additive to be non-carcinogenic. Both the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the FDA deem it safe.

New Zealand Earthquake on 7/7/11
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand civil defence authorities cancelled a tsunami warning on Thursday but warned of possible stronger than normal ocean currents around the east coast of the country after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean north east of the country.
It said a tsunami was generated by the earthquake around the Kermadec Islands, around 1180 kilometres (737 miles) north east of New Zealand, but scientists has advised it was of no threat to New Zealand.
"However, they expect that there will be unusually strong tidal surges and currents," the Civil Defence Ministry said in a statement.
The first surge had been expected at eastern coastal areas of the North Island just before 9 a.m. local time (10 p.m. British time), but there were no reports of unusual activity.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.8 quake struck at 7:03 a.m. on Thursday (8:03 p.m. British time on Wednesday) at the epicentre, 131 miles (211 km) east of Raoul Island, part of the Kermadec archipelago, and was only 30 miles (48 km) deep.

Iceland's Volcano Ready To Erupt
The Hekla volcano is close to the ash-spewing Eyjafjoell, which last year caused the world's biggest airspace shut down since World War II, affecting more than 100,000 flights and eight million passengers.
Experts have said measurements of Hekla - dubbed "Gateway to Hell" by locals - indicate magma movement.
"The movements around Hekla have been unusual in the last two to three days," University of Iceland geophysicist Pall Einarsson said.
While this might not necessarily mean an immediate blast, "the volcano is ready to erupt", he stressed.
"The mountain has been slowly expanding in the last few years because of magma build up," he explained.
Another geophysicist, Ari Trausit Gudmundsson, said measurements around Hekla were very "unusual" and the volcano looked ready to blow.
"Something is going on," he said, stressing though that "if or when the volcano erupts is unclear".

Bill Gates Wants To Vaccinate Every Child
“It’s now that we’re gonna start to get the last two vaccines that rich kids take for granted, the pneumococcal and rotavirus, and over these next five years, get them out to every child everywhere,” said Gates. “That means for the first time ever that we have equity in vaccines.”
By structuring his statements this way, Gates first implies that vaccines are some type of precious commodity that “rich kids” take for granted, and that need to get into the hands of “poor kids” to create health care equality. He then beckons the nations of the world to use taxpayer dollars to fund this massive, multi-billion-dollar dream to “save the children” by injecting them with various mixtures of toxic chemicals.
We have heard it all before, especially from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has been pushing for the whole world to be vaccinated for many years now (http://www.naturalnews.com/Bill_Gat…). It is clear that Gates and his supporters will stop at nothing until every nation in the world is funding his vaccine campaigns, despite the fact that many of the vaccines being pushed come with a whole slew of devastating side effects, and do not necessarily provide any proven benefit (http://www.naturalnews.com/vaccines…).
“Why are we lining the pockets of Big Pharma like this?” asked Daniel Berman, a vaccines expert from Doctors Without Borders, concerning the several developed nations that have already pledged billions to Gates’ agenda. “That just screams conflict of interest and corporate welfare to us.”

Chemtrails - Delivery System For Dept. Of Death's Toxic Cocktails
Dept. Of Death's Toxic Cocktails
To ignore chemtrails is to pretend that the DOD would never test its chemical and biological weapons on unsuspecting people. Most people living on earth want only life, liberty, peace and the pursuit of happiness. In grisly contrast, America's military-industrial complex harbors an introverted and pathological fixation with war games and death technology. In its inexorable quest for absolute power -- that evolutionary state of decay warned about by President Eisenhower so many years ago -- the complex has unleashed a terrifying array of secretive and dangerous experiments. These include weather modification, earthquake induction and numerous chemical-biological tests on unwitting subjects.
Every aspect of our physical environment is now being manipulated for war games. Discolored skies are continuously polluted by jets spraying chemical aerosols. Bizarre and unpredictable weather is often military-made. Electromagnetic abnormalities -- including artificial lightning -- are generated by HAARP-like installations in sundry places. People are becoming increasingly ill and immuno-compromised from such ecological tampering.
In an expose on Henry Kissinger's momentous war crimes, author Christopher Hitchens writes in Harper's magazine that during the Vietnam War, a U.S. helicopter unit posted the slogan, "Death is our business and business is good." This arrogant paradigm is perfect for the grotesque network of over 100 laboratories on campuses and industrial parks across the nation where military and contract personnel develop new technologies and strategies for killing human beings in the name of national security.
From the military's own abstract of a workshop on "Chemical Lethality Predictions" we learn that when planes spray deadly chemicals in the form of rain or mist, it is possible to calculate how much of those killer agents can be deposited on each person on the ground. The calculations are so precise that "...ten large VX drops that fall over a populated area have the chance to kill up to 9 out of 10 people."
What business has the military to be spraying "populated areas" with lethal toxins? This is not defense at all. This is genocide.
Many Americans have reported seeing or feeling chemical mists fall from the sky during chemtrail spray episodes. Chemtrail investigator Will Thomas reports that people hit by these mists usually become gravely ill within 48 hours. Thomas tells of hiker Joe Burton in Tennessee who, in 1998, was sprayed by a plane leaving a heavy toxic fog at tree-top level. Burton contracted symptoms similar to Gulf War Illness. Strange chemicals had entered his lungs, attacking his liver, gallbladder and kidneys. He was also found to have a very rare flu-like virus that was tracked to Geneva, Switzerland, home of the World Health Organization.
Congressional hearings of 1975, 1977 and 1994 confirm in nauseating detail that our illustrious Department of Death has used the American population as hapless guinea pigs since WWII. Rutgers professor Leonard Cole collected from U.S. military records a horrifying list of biological and chemical agents furtively tested on American and Canadian civilian populations. In 1999, Jonathan Moreno of Clinton's Committee on Human Radiation Experiments, also confirmed in his book Undue Risk decades of murderous military-intelligence experimentation on civilians without their knowledge or consent.
In 1953, an odious series of 36 tests was conducted on citizens of Winnipeg in Canada. Our government lied to the Winnipeg mayor, assuring him that the tests were non-toxic and defense-necessary. The actual purpose of these CIA-designed tests was to see how large a percentage of the population could be given chemical-induced cancer.
Our spray planes and spray trucks saturated the people of Winnipeg with the carcinogen zinc cadmium sulfide, the same chemical sprayed on many American cities. By calculating the number of people who subsequently came into medical clinics complaining of sore throats, bronchial problems and ringing ears, the test-masters determined that had the chemical not been watered down, they could have induced cancer in one-third of the Winnipeg population.
In 1994, Dr. Cole testified before a Senate committee that he feared the military might develop new and genetically engineered pathogens. He could not have known then that our government had been working on such heinous pathogens since the 1960s, when it initiated a special virus cancer program in order to create contagious cancers for biowarfare.
By 1996, Dr. Leonard Horowitz confirmed in his book Emerging Viruses that both AIDS and the Marburg-Ebola complex were man-made monstrosities hatched out of America's biowarfare labs.
Still today the military continues with open air testing in populated areas across the United States, using dangerous live simulants to test biowarfare detection gadgets. These open-air tests involve the spraying of dangerous germs from backpack canisters and vehicles. Because these germs can cause everything from meningitis to heart disease, the personnel who conduct the tests are always protected with gas masks and body suits. People in the communities being sprayed are given no protection at all.
Captain Joyce Riley stood before a group of government officials last year in Louisiana where the military was determined to conduct open air germ tests, against the vociferous will of the people. She boldly told them that the only acts of terrorism ever conducted on American soil have been perpetrated by our own government. Never were truer words spoken!
Our government's hypocritical warnings about domestic terrorism are ludicrous since a criminal element of the Clinton administration master-minded the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City. Former Oklahoma Congressman Charles Key and his fact-finding committee have documented fedgov's prior knowledge of the bombing, its complicity in wiring columns inside the building with explosives and its heinous coverup of the facts. The Oklahoma bombing, which killed 180 people including children in daycare, qualifies the fedgov itself as a premier terrorist organization.
Meantime, U.S . officials deliberately exaggerate the threat of terrorism from Third World malcontents. Even the General Accounting Office admits foreign terrorists would not likely use bio-weapons because they would have to overcome "significant technical and operational challenges."
Yet, as the mainstream media reported two years ago, the terrorist racket is a huge growth industry for hungry corporations that interface with the Department of Death and lust for $10 billion set aside for terrorism prevention.
In 1994, after Dr. Cole testified before the Senate, the Rockefeller Committee issued a report confirming 50 years of secret government testing on both civilians and military personnel. Perversely -- while all of this lip service was going on -- the military was simultaneously conducting a series of hideous biological warfare tests on the people of Oakville, Washington.
During the summer of 1994, U.S. military aircraft began dropping a gel substance on the tiny town of Oakville near the Pacific coast. Everybody in town came down with flu and pneumonia-like symptoms. Some people were hospitalized and remained ill for months. Pets and barnyard animals died.
The police chief was patrolling the town one morning at 3 a.m. when a deluge of sticky stuff coated the windshield of his patrol car. He cleaned the goo with rubber gloves but just breathing it made him deathly ill. By afternoon he had major trouble breathing.
The gel material was tested by a number of government and private labs which found human blood cells and nasty bacteria, including a modified version of pseudonomas fluorescens, cited in over 160 military papers as an experimental biowarfare bacteria. Unsolved Mysteries aired the story on national television in May, 1997. Several Oakville citizens reported bizarre encounters with FEMA officials and intelligence personnel from Fort Hood Texas -- home of the Black Hawk unit. These spooks made repeated visits to Oakville, probing people about their health and reportedly intimidating those who had been interviewed on television.
Also in 1997, rancher William Wallace was plowing his fields near Kettle Falls Washington when a U.S. Navy Intruder swooped down and sprayed him with a fine mist. He became so deathly sick he could not lift his arm above his head for days. He lost his job because of his illness. His cat's face became paralyzed and actually began to dissolve until it died.
Wallace went to the CBS affiliate in Spokane with his story. Two days later, a turbo prop aircraft dived over his house spraying something that made him and his family ill again. Wallace told chemtrail investigator Will Thomas he felt this was a warning to "shut up." The CBS affiliate in Spokane finally did a two-part news interview with Wallace in the spring of 1999.
Again in 1997, in Southern Idaho near the town of Caldwell, seven healthy people died in their sleep when their lungs collapsed. All were in perfect health. An article in the Arizona Republic noted that people had suspicions that officials might be covering something up. Two years later an eye-witness report was filed about a dark fibrous material falling on Caldwell homes, cars and lawns shortly before the mysterious deaths occurred. Residents said the material looked like feces.
Medical journalist Ermina Cassani has investigated nation-wide reports of such biological waste being dropped on neighborhoods from low-flying planes. Cassani investigated over 30 different yuk drops during the years 1998 and 1999. In 1998, she obtained a sample that looked like dried blood from a Michigan house. Examining this material, a University of Michigan lab found pseudonomas fluorescens, the same bug used on Oakville. It can cause horrible human infections including fatal shock, and because of its glowing properties, it allows the military to track its path.
There were also other ugly pathogens, including staph and several fungi which can cause lung disease. Consider the high fungi content of this sample in the context of the mysterious fungus that infected Kentucky horses last spring. Could not furtive aerial drops provide a convenient mode of economic sabotage?
Cassani also reported 29 biological "drops" in the state of Utah. HAZMAT teams in biochemical hazard gear cleaned up the feces with chlorine. Utah is home to the infamous Dugway Proving Grounds, a chemical-biological test center where hundreds of former workers have contracted Gulf-War like symptoms, according to a 1997 testimony before a government committee.
During numerous chemtrail spray episodes, the small town of Sallisaw in Eastern Oklahoma area was saturated with a web-like material in which lab techs discovered an unusually large enterobacteria. The critter was a mutant of E. coli, salmonella and anthrax; undoubtedly one of the military's designer bugs. Sallisaw resident Patrick Edgar has reported on the internet that the entire town was made extremely ill by the spraying and that the town now has epidemic rates of both lupus and cancer.
Biological weapons encapsulated in protective coatings like synthetic webbing would explain why so many people who see web-like filaments drifting down from the skies report illness after touching the webs. When the webbing is closely examined, it is proven to be man-made filaments of the type developed by both industrial and military entities. Last year, South Africans reported web-like filaments falling from aircraft that formed a blanket-like appearance across vegetation, telephone poles and fences. When the cattle ate it they developed large bumps on their hides, became listless and went blind. Informed people everywhere are now wary of "web looking" materials.
This year, using both electrostatic precipitation devices and HEPA air filters to collect outdoor atmospheric samples, chemtrail researcher Clifford Carnicom and his associates have documented desiccated blood cells floating in the atmosphere in both New Mexico and Colorado. With so many atmospheric samples containing biological components, Carnicom has concluded that "crimes of the highest order are being perpetrated against citizens without their knowledge or consent."
Who besides the Department of Death would have the money and inclination to keep our atmosphere besmirched with such biological materials? There is much accumulated evidence that gels, webs, fecal matter, powders and blood cells may be used to harbor viruses, mycoplasma and/or other bio-engineered toxins until they can reach their intended hosts. No big surprise. Anything is possible from a military-industrial complex which has ruthlessly unleashed ebola and AIDS upon the world.
For more information on the biological aspects of the on-going chemtrail project see www.carnicom.com.

Lindsey Williams - The Global Freedom Report 30 June 2011 | Lindsey Williams The Energy Non Crisis
"The nations of the world, especially China, are dumping U.S. currency and buying gold. "The reason why it is getting so hard for people to buy gold is that "they" do not want people to be able to protect themselves." "They don't want people to have something that is REAL." "They fear people buying gold because it is something "they" can NOT control. They feel that only they, the elite, should own gold.""They regard it as real money." Gold and Oil generally move in tandem i.e., when oil goes up, so does gold. This has not been the case since the oil market collapsed. Gold has shown huge relative strength to the price of oil. Because of intense world wide demand and speculation the relationship between gold and oil will no longer continue. Gold will now move independently of oil.

Hunger is NOT a Population Problem
"World hunger is extensive in spite of sufficient global food resources. Therefore increased food production is no solution. The problem is that many people are too poor to buy readily available food. Therefore measures solving the poverty problem is what is required to solve the world hunger problem"
international trade and economic policies that have lead to immense poverty and hunger, not food scarcity due to over population. In other words, this is a political problem, not necessarily a shortage problem.
Oftentimes, people make the argument that population increases increases the lack of food or ability to provide enough food to sustain such growth. However, for many decades food production has more than kept up with population growth. As Greenpeace has noted, most hungry people live in countries that have food surpluses rather than deficits.
When weighing the impacts on demands by populations versus the way large chemical companies and industrial agricultural businesses promote certain types of agricultural practices, and the serious threat of top soil loss (which will affect yields in the future, where large populations could feel an additional burden), it is less certain that populations and “over” population is the main cause.

The Population Problem
"The human population of the planet is estimated to now have passed 6 billion people."
We now are passing 7 billion people this October. So when was this article written ? In the 80's ?? 90's ?? Try September 2001. Latest estimations show we are adding another billion people to the planet every 12-15 years ... yet according to this article it ONLY TOOK 10 YEARS !!
http://www.globalissues.org/article/199/population-numbers
This is a major problem with food shortages, lack of access to clean water & the spread of disease due to people living in very close proximity to one another ...
This explains partially why the Elite are doing what they are doing .
